Well you know about the atrocities in Darfur, right? The fear has been that conflict in the region scared off all the herds usually seen in massive numbers, because for the last few years the dear beautiful gazelles have been nowhere in sight.
Fortunately, they have recently reappeared in massive numbers. At least the migratory herds have - which means Sudan has renewed hope for bringing income to the nation through ecotourism. The main source of employment is created by their natural resources, and the herds coming back is definitely a good economical sign.
Unfortunately, buffalo in their obstinance to stay right where they are all year round, have nearly disappeared. As well as other herds that do not migrate, which also creates a financial burden on the country. Either way, Sudan is dedicated to protecting their wildlife.
The task is to find ways to create, within a devastated country, the tools and the education to value and protect these wild herds and their ecosystem. It is not a choice between saving people and saving wild animals. It is a matter of protecting the natural resources that allow humans and animals to thrive. - Source: New York Times article.
