Seeing this cartoon above, I name this award half sarcastically. Robbing the rich to feed the poor? Fighting against injustice and tyranny? Robbing and fighting are a bit too harsh of words for what social entrepreneurs are up to, but they are interested in feeding the poor and fighting injustice and tyranny through entrepreneurship, so why not? Send along your ideas for names for a weekly (or monthly) social entrepreneurs award if you have any better ideas.
But while I'm waiting on that, here's your change to cast your weekly votes in the comment section on these social entrepreneurs. One name only please. Whoever has the most votes will move on to the next week with a new set of social entrepreneurs. So maybe more Social Entrepreneurial Idol than Robin Hood Award ...
This is kind of an award on the fly idea here, so hang with me while I work out the kinks ... this may be a weekly thing, but most likely whenever I get around to it. So here, your first three SE's to vote for:
*Rut Kolínská of the Czech Republic, founder of the Network of Maternity Centers, and Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur of the Year for that country.
*Now, how about a curve ball? Well known celebro-chef Jamie Oliver has recast himself as a social entrepreneur by training unemployed teens at his restaurant Fifteen. He's also striking out at 'shit' lunches packed by similarly befouled parents. See more at Spiked.
*Egypt's representative on the Schwab Social Entrepreneur of the Year list, Helmy Abouleish for developing biodynamic farming methods in Egypt.
Vote wisely ... choose one of these three and the one with the most votes will go on to the next round.
