You know how bad news can travel around the world before good news has had a chance to whisper? Apparently, the same concept applies to medication in the Middle East.

Due to the lack of adequate and accessable health care in Afghanistan, the populous has decided to medicate their ailments with something that will only make things worse - opium. What's worse, not only do some of them not realize they are only worsening their situation, but they are also medicating their children in the same way.

According to the article at Spiegel Online, opium use has decreased in areas where health care has become more readily accessable.

However, for the rest of the country, they can either travel two days to get proper medication, or spend twice their daily pay and get opium right in their hometown.

Sometimes I think the price of convenience is just a bit too steep.
