Columnist Jenni Carlson in Saturday's Oklahoman attacked Oaklahoma State backup QB Bobby Reid, essentially stating that he just didn't care about the game. Coach Gundy didn't like it. No, not in the least. And while most bloggers are calling it a meltdown, I'm with Peter Schrager in saying it was the right thing to do.
Honestly I don't know why some reporters aren't called out on slander or libel for what they say. I mean, she flat out said Reid has a bad attitude. That's not something you should postulate in a newspaper. Maybe that the player isn't doing so well right now, and perhaps feels a bit under the weather - but not to attack someone's character outright.
Then of course you have publications like Time and Newsweek doing much the same. Newsweek for instance attacked Mother Theresa, of all people, unleashing the hound Christopher Hitchens to add unnecessary questions to a few letters she wrote pondering her own faith. Time published an article on the Pope possibly being euthenized - both based entirely on circumstantial evidence. I may as well have read this in a conspiracy magazine or tabloid.
Although I was alerted of this by perhaps the most biased broadcast of all - The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly. He mentioned something on Tuesday's show which I whole-heartedly agree with and even hope to happen - but of course, he stated it in such a tone that I doubt he would agree with me.
Loosely quoted, "the only thing standing in the way of gay marriage, unlimited abortions, (etc etc) are the religious people. So these liberals are going to do all they can to demonize religion and take away the traditional marriage (etc etc)."
And yet he calls his show "The No Spin Zone"? Sounds pretty Republican and Christian to me.
A Christmas joke comes to mind. You know how the angel got on top of the tree? Well, he was the angel who came to God at a very hectic time and asked Him where to put it.
(In case you missed it, in short God told the angel to "sit and spin")
