Pure Electric (Horse)Power: Today's Future Solutions

I don't know about you, but I've wanted a Shelby Cobra for as long as I can remember - and now I don't have to feel guilty about getting one. That particular Shelby pictured above (photo by Dave Bullock) is a brand spanking new kit car from HST Automotive converted to use K2 battery horse power.

It was one of the many electric transportation solutions showcased in the International Electric Vehicle Symposium (EVS) this year, with a lot more where that came from over at Wired.

But wait, there's more!

It's Going to Die, but it's to Die For

tesla range

Ooooo - red. Pardon me for a moment whilst I wipe up the drool. This lovely specimen of high performance machinery from Tesla has one small hangup - it's too sexy for its engine. Or rather, the company is having problems finding a transmission that can handle gear shifts while the car remains at full torque, a problem quite unique to electric vehicles.

In the meantime, they're thinking about selling versions of it outfitted with "temporary" transmissions, which are basically guaranteed to fail after a few thousand miles. Of course, they will replace those with a version whose days are not numbered once they do get the tech right.

And Now for Something a Little More Domesticated

Although the GM Volt is a hybrid car, it is going to more than outdo any competition. The hangup for GM on releasing a totally electric car lies in the cost of a battery. They're REALLY expensive.

"The Volt runs on batteries, but it contains a gas motor that recharges the battery after 40 miles. With the gas recharger and a full tank of gas, the car has a range of 640 miles. The batteries also can get recharged by plugging the car into the wall at night. Mileage should be in the triple digit range, or about 100 miles per gallon. People who don't drive more than 40 miles a day will barely consume gas. Thus, the Volt will outdo many plug-in hybrids on mileage, Farah said." Source: CNET

Also highlighted in that article is GM's hydrogen powered Equinox. For some reason I'm reminded of "The Saint" (Val Kilmer... oh there I go drooling again).

Although, I'm also thinking "Hindenburg" for some strange reason. Hmm. Perhaps that is a technology that I'm willing to avoid for a while.
