Medecins Sans Frontieres in Somalia
Filed in archive Int'l Development on April 29, 2007
Somalia is one of the few nations in this world effectively without a government. They have been in torrid civil war for more than a decade, and it is coming apart at the seams. The most recent concern, as reported by BBC, is a worsening cholera epidemic.
A medical charity, Medecins Sans Frontieres, is desperately trying to help with the situation, but the people have grown so afraid, it seems they would rather die of cholera than succumb to whatever fate may befall them should they seek medical treatment.
The violence is not only hindering the patients, but also any preventative measures. And I'm sorry to say it, but it doesn't look like the American government is helping any.

Somalia is a hard case to talk about, but what can other do if they have stopped seeking for help... Can we force them not to die? It is quite a hard challenge and innocent may also die in the process... No matter what you do... people die..

This is a tough one - we have to stop trying to put Western solutions into problems from around the world. But at the same time, there are people losing their lives every day. It\'s a very tough situation in Somalia, but I have confidence that Obama well be well-equipped to handle it.
