When hsbc relocated to its headquarters in Canary Wharf from more than 20 offices around London, it had 50,000 pieces of redundant office furniture on its hands. Rather than sending it to landfill, it paid for the furniture to be taken away by a tiny recycling business called Green-works.
It was a risk for both sides. Green-works had just two staff and had processed no more than 100 tonnes of furniture up to that point. Now it was being offered a contract to refurbish 3,000 tonnes of bankers' desks, chairs, filing cabinets and coat stands.
It was feasible only if the bank paid upfront, says Colin Crooks, founder and chief executive of Greenworks. "I said: 'I'm confident I can do this but you'll just have to trust me.'"
