Dzanc Books
Filed in archive Social Enterprise on September 25, 2006
We're getting all bookish here at Audeamus. If I do see any new and innovative nonprofits supporting writers and literary ventures I tend to point them out. I received a press release about Dzanc Books a couple weeks back, but hadn't mentioned it yet.
The aims of Dzanc Books are to support writers and advance the readership of literary journals. One of the problems for writers is there are so many literary journals out there that don't pay at all, or if they do it is in copies or a small honorarium. I have my own thoughts on a lot of this, but I'll save that for another time (I think some of these should probably go the way of the dinosaurs if they don't do well, and others should work more at marketing their product). Still, there are a lot of great literary magazines that should be getting a wider readership, but for many reasons don't. Dzanc Books hopes to support more readership for these magazines, as well as publish two books of literary fiction per year. They are also working on educational programs in schools and writers in residence programs for schools.
